A 22-year-old man was killed on Highway 401 near Brockville early Saturday morning after being struck by a transport truck, according to the OPP.

Eastbound 401 lanes remain closed from Highway 29 in Brockville to Maitland, with morning reports of dense gridlock stretching at least three kilometres. 

The pedestrian was struck at about 4:10 a.m. at kilometre marker 702, just east of Sharpe's Lane in Elizabethtown-Kitley Township.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not been released by police, with next-of-kin have yet to be located.

The truck driver was not injured.

Police are continuing to investigate what caused the fatal collision, namely why the man was on foot along the highway, and whether the driver will be charged.
