A Toronto man who was convicted of killing a 21-year-old more than 20 years ago is still on the loose after escaping from a minimum-security prison in Kingston.
Police have launched a province-wide hunt for 42-year-old Andrew John Wood after they discovered him missing from the Frontenac Institution on Bath Road Saturday morning. He escaped some time between 7:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.
Robert Ryan Glenn was murdered on Feb. 23, 1989. He was found in Caledon, northwest of Toronto, in an embankment along 15th Side Road. He died from a gunshot wound to the head. Wood was arrested three days later and was eventually convicted of second-degree murder.
At the time of his arrest, Wood was living in North York, in the Highway 401 and Don Mills Road area.
He was serving a life sentence at the Frontenac Institution because he was considered a low risk to public safety.
A spokesperson for Correctional Services Canada told ctvottawa.ca that the facility's perimeter is not directly controlled by guards.
"We're still working very closely with police to try and locate the offender,' said spokesperson Holly Knowles.
Anyone with information about the missing man's whereabouts is asked to call police or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
The Frontenac Institution opened in 1972 and can hold up to 193 inmates in three housing units. Nearly 30 per cent are serving life sentences.
Wood began serving his sentence on March 19, 1990. Knowles could not confirm how much of that time had been spent at the Frontenac Institution.
