More than 250 people set up camp outside Ottawa’s city hall Thursday night to raise money and awareness about youth homelessness.

“You get a little bit of a look at what the homeless youth face every night and it's a good thing to do and experience,” said Grace Tessier.

This is the second year for the initiative which raised $90,000 for the Youth Services Bureau of Ottawa, nearly three times more than last year.

“We use that to fund specialized shelter and housing for teens, people from 12 to 20,” said Mike Weider with the YSB.

The chiefs of the Ottawa fire, paramedic, and police services were among those taking part.

“The idea of having to spend time outdoors during the winter is quite horrifying to most of us so if we can do something to help homeless youth it's great,” said Sophie Oliver.

The camp out goes from 6 p.m. Thursday until 7 a.m. Friday.
