Ontario Provincial Police continue to investigate the grisly discovery of human remains in Calabogie Sunday afternoon.

Police say the discovery was made just after 3:30 p.m. by a group of people using a wooded area near Calabogie and Norton Road.

"The OPP launched an investigation and have confirmed it is human remains that were located," said Sgt. Kristine Rae of the OPP.

"We do have our emergency response team doing a grid search of the area, as well as our K-9 units . . . we do have a mobile command unit because of the fact it is a very rural area."

An emergency response team and crime unit are scouring the area for more clues and treating the situation as “suspicious,” with bags of evidence being taken from the scene.

Police said anyone could be a potential witness in the investigation and were stopping cars on Norton Road to talk to people, mostly hunters at this time of year.

Their investigation continues on Tuesday.

Possible link to missing persons case

An Ottawa man missing since June 17 is believed to have been in Calabogie on the day of his disappearance.

Fouad Nayel’s family says they were contacted by police, but officials will not say the remains are linked to Nayel’s case.

When Nayel first went missing, his family feared foul play was behind his disappearance.

A post mortem has yet to be scheduled and anyone with information is asked to contact the OPP.
