A 36-year-old man is in custody after an eight-hour standoff involving a young child ended peacefully when a police tactical unit stormed a home in Brockville Wednesday morning.

Brockville police and Ontario Provincial Police were called to a home at 100 John St. at about 1:30 a.m. when a female resident fled the home to notify police after a violent dispute.

"Our officers attended and learned the male person was still in the house on John Street with a two-and-half-year-old little girl," said Brockville's Deputy Police Chief Adrian Geraghty.

Neighbours who were evacuated from the area a short time later told CTV Ottawa the police presence was unusual for a normally quiet neighbourhood.

"I saw about half a dozen provincial police vans here and a couple of police cars and a lot of people milling around," said Lloyd Cowan.

"It's definitely a shocker. Wonder if this is the community I want to stay in. If it's going to be like that, I don't want to," said area resident Randy Laviolette, who only moved to the neighbourhood one month ago.

After eight hours, the Ontario Provincial Police's tactical unit entered the home, removing both the man and the child without incident.

"They operated very professionally. It was just great to see them in action and how they conducted themselves and as I say it was a team effort with out people and with the OPP," said Geraghty.

Clifford Lane is facing charges of uttering death threats and assault without incident.

Police are continuing their investigation.
