Police say worn tires may have contributed to a fatal crash on Highway 307 near Val-des-Monts, north of Gatineau.

Richard Paiement, 57, was killed when his SUV left the road near Highway 366, flattening his vehicle Monday afternoon. He was not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown from his vehicle.

Police are still investigating the cause of the collision, and a full mechanical inspection of the vehicle is underway.

Investigators say the road was wet at the time of the crash and at least one of the SUV's rear tires showed signs of heavy wear.

Speed and alcohol are not considered factors in the collision.
