A high risk sex offender who has a history of violent sex attacks dating back to 1977 has moved to downtown Ottawa.

Forty-seven-year-old Leonard Watts moved to the Capital after he was released from the Kingston Penitentiary Tuesday where he was serving a 26-month sentence for sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl.

Police say Watts originally had planned to move to Brockville but changed his mind after Brockville police issued a photo to warn the community he was moving to the area.

The warning sparked concern among residents who took their worries to the Internet, setting up a Facebook group to create awareness about Watts' presence.

Unlike Brockville police, Ottawa police did not warn the public Watts was moving to the Capital. Officers say the less attention Watts gets, the more likely he will stay under police watch.
