A Hawkesbury couple is dead after a fire at the Place Mont-Roc retirement home Friday night.
Provincial police said 84-year-old Marie-Anne Bonin and 87-year-old Jean-Paul Bonin were trapped in the Hawkesbury home after fire broke out around 9:30 p.m.
Friends said they had been married for more than 60 years and were described as "a lovely couple."
Almost 90 other residents were evacuated from the home with no injuries, although some were taken to the Hawkesbury General Hospital for precautionary reasons.
More then 30 residents who weren't picked up by family spent the night at the Prescott-Russell Residence across the street.
The building was built in the 1980s and didn't have sprinklers, with the fire happening on the same day as a provincial inquest report on a retirement home fire in 2009 that left four people dead.
The coroner's jury recommends legislation that would make it illegal to not have smoke detectors in all retirement home rooms.
Only long-term care facilities in Ontario that are built after 1997 are required to have sprinklers.
Residents won't be able to return to the home for weeks and maybe even months, police said in a news conference.
The cause of the fire is still unknown, with the local OPP crime unit and fire marshal called in to help investigate.
They said the fire started on the third floor, with a sofa or lightning hitting an air conditioning unit as possible origins of the fire.
