There's a new kid on the block ready to take a swing at the fight for cancer. The Queensway Carleton opened the Irving Greenberg Family Cancer Centre on Friday.

Its vision is to provide care in the west end of Ottawa -- as well as the Ottawa Valley, a vision that received helping hands from the Greenberg family in Ottawa.

It was 19 years ago that Mr. Greenberg lost his fight with cancer.

"It's almost mind-boggling to be inside this building that bears my father's name," said Dan Greenberg.

His family brought $9 million to the $82-million project, which will see its first patients admitted in April.

Fortunately for the hospital, which is faced with potential job cuts this spring, the centre will create 60 new clinical jobs.

"It allows transitioning of the staff, which is sort of a good thing (because) they know the hospital," says Tom Schoenberg, president and chief executive of the hospital.

Whether any personnel at the hospital will lose jobs in the next few months remains to be seen, though.
