Gold parties are becoming all the craze for residents hoping to cash in on the recession.

"I've never been to a party where they're going to give you money to get rid of your junk. I'll take it," said party-goer Janna McCooeye.

McCooeye is referring to a 'gold party,' where people are given money in return for their old gold jewelry.

"We've had all of this gold for years that we've never ever worn and Dawn told me she was having this party and I said, 'That'd be great because it's just hanging out in a jewelry box.'"

Now, McCooeye is almost $800 richer after selling a bunch of her old jewelry.

Gold Party Canada is kicking their business into high gear in Ottawa as the economy starts to rebound from the recession.

"It's fun to make people happy. They come to an evening that's a social evening, they don't have to put their hand in their purse and they walk out with money in their purse," said Hana Cammy, a representative for Gold Party Canada.

Representatives say most of the people they meet are shocked at the amount of money they can make from items that would otherwise collect dust and never be worn again. The agency says some people even sell their gold teeth.

After purchasing the gold, Gold Party Canada refines and recycles it.
