An 11-year-old Ottawa Valley girl killed in a ski accident at Calabogie Peaks Resort west of Ottawa has been identified as Nicole Wren.
Wren was in Grade 6 at The Stewart School in Perth and would have turned 12 on Saturday.
She was on a school ski trip when she lost control on a run and struck a tree Thursday afternoon. She was wearing a helmet.
Police say Wren suffered critical injuries. She was airlifted to the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario, where she later succumbed to those injuries.
Grief counsellors are currently on hand at Wren's school in Perth, where they are working with students to deal with their grief surrounding the tragic and sudden loss of one of their classmates.
The school has 428 students enrolled in classes from junior kindergarten to Grade 8. A spokesperson for the Upper Canada School Board said classes will continue as per usual.
Tributes pour in on Facebook
More than 300 people had already joined a Facebook group to honour Wren's memory Friday morning.
Tributes remembered Wren as a beautiful child whose life was taken too soon.
"I Miss This Girl, she never got the chance to grow up and be what she wanted to be; 11 is too young and she Is Such a Smart, Pretty, Fun, Young, and special to my heart," wrote Maia Williams.
"We all love Nicole Wren and Will Miss her always."
"I watched this little girl grow up, and I can't believe that a simple ski accident could take such a beautiful girl's life. You are amazing Nicole, and are missed so much! My thoughts and prayers go out to the Wren family!" added Amy Patterson.
Many others expressed their sorrow and condolence, even though they acknowledged that they did not know Wren very well.
An autopsy is scheduled for today to determine Wren's exact cause of death.
Ontario provincial police are investigating.
