A five-year-old girl died in hospital after her family's minivan was T-boned in Orleans over the weekend.

The crash happened just before 4 p.m. on Sunday near Innes and Cyrville Roads.

The vehicle was struck from the side behind the driver's seat, where the little girl was sitting. She suffered a life-threatening head injury, as well as severe multi-system trauma.

When she was admitted to hospital, her condition was considered grave. She later died of her injuries.

When emergency officials arrived at the scene on Sunday, a medic from the Canadian Forces -- who was driving a few cars behind the crash -- was already attending to the little girl.

"I don't think anyone can ever be prepared to treat a child. Let alone one in a traumatic incident like that," Sgt. Alannah Gilmore told CTV Ottawa on Monday.

"I could see this young little girl pinned under the side door, basically almost just like a blanket."

The female medic worked with a firefighter to establish the child's airway. They managed to start administering oxygen while firefighters removed the van's door to get the girl out of the crushed vehicle.

Paramedics took over once the girl was freed. Although they managed to bring her back to life, she succumbed to her injuries in hospital.

The girl's mother and eight-year-old brother were also injured.

The mother sustained minor facial injuries. The boy was treated for multiple injuries that are not considered life-threatening. Another brother escaped injury.

Ottawa police are investigating.
