A 16-year-old Gatineau boy is dead after he lost control of his ATV and crashed into a tree in a rural area of west Quebec Tuesday night.

Police say the teen was riding on St-Antoine Road in Val-des-Monts when he crashed his all terrain vehicle. He was transported to the Gatineau Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Although police believe speed was likely a factor in the crash, the teen's mangled ATV is undergoing a mechanical inspection.

Police say they often receive complaints about the misuse of ATVs in the area, many of which involve teens or young adults speeding on public roadways.
