A new bylaw in Gatineau could mean fines for residents who don't recycle.

Residents could be fined up to $200 if they are caught putting paper, glass, metal or plastic in the garbage rather than recycling bins.

Residents will get three warnings under the new bylaw before they are issued a fine, according to the city.

The city will use so-called 'Green Patrols' to monitor what residents are throwing into their garbage bins. The new bylaw does not affect the brown bin composting program, for now.

It will be illegal for municipalities in Quebec to send paper and cardboard to landfills starting in January 2013.
