Residents in Gatineau got their first look at plans for a new $80-million downtown arena in the city's Hull sector.

The arena would be built on land purchased by the city at the corner of Montcalm and Wellington.

The new arena would have 8,000 seats, replacing the 50-year-old Robert Guertin arena -- home of the Gatineau Olympiques.

A funding commitment by the federal government is not yet guaranteed. However, the city hopes to start construction on the project sometime next year.
