A 55-year-old man is recovering after being struck in the leg by a home invader wielding a sharp weapon like an axe or a crowbar.

Police say the home invasion happened shortly around 12:15 a.m. Saturday, April 16, 2016 on Rue des Pommetiers in Gatineau. They say the intruder broke into the home before getting into a fight with the homeowner.

Neighbors say a man was spotted running down the road carrying a thick, heavy object that appeared to be an axe or a crowbar.

At this point police do not know whether the break and enter was targeted or random. The investigation is ongoing.

Police have not made any arrests and do not have any suspects. They are, however, looking for a man who is about 6'5 and was last seen in that neighborhood around 12:15 a.m. wearing a black t-shirt.

"If it's random, it could be scary because it could happen to anyone. I'm guessing things like this are usually not," said Jean-Guy Clarke, a nearby resident.

Throughout the day Saturday residents drove past the home just to see what had happened. Police cruisers are currently on scene as investigators continue to canvass the area and speak to witnesses.

The victim suffered non-life threatening leg injuries and is expected to make a full recovery.
