Jason Murphy was only three months away from getting married when the 26-year-old died in a car crash near Smiths Falls. The funeral for Murphy, remembered as a quiet but loving man, will be held on Wednesday.
After a visitation at Lannin Funeral Home in Smiths Falls on Tuesday (2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.), the funeral for the Carleton University graduate will take place the next day at 11 a.m., at St. Francis de Sales Church.
He died in a single-car crash on Saturday on Roger Stevens Drive in Lanark County, just east of Smiths Falls.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation, but Ontario Provincial Police say alcohol was not a factor.
High-tech grad used technology to meet fiancee
Murphy graduated with a computer science degree at Carleton University, taking placements around the Ottawa area to pick up experience in one of the nation's best spots for high tech.
He even used technology to meet his fiancee, Amanda Wohlers, online and used Skype to make the proposal on St. Patrick's Day in 2009. Wohlers lives in Florida, but they remained close despite how far apart they lived.
Murphy was waiting for his U.S. visa to move to Florida to be with Wohlers, and they were planning to get married on the Fort De Soto Beach in St. Petersburg this May.
"Amanda, with her usual sense of humor, stalled just long enough to spark a very worried reaction from Jason before she said yes, and they both laughed with smiles on their faces," said the couple's wedding website.
"It was a very fitting engagement story considering how their love story began online so many months before. They always have and always will hold each other close in each other's hearts, even if the distance between them is great at times."
