An esteemed public servant will be remembered at his funeral in Ottawa Thursday, after a long battle with cancer.

Arthur Kroeger, who is regarded as one of Canada's top public servants of the last century, died with his family by his side at Elisabeth-Bruyere Health Centre Friday.

Kroeger served as deputy minister in six federal departments between 1975 and his retirement in 1992.

Kroeger was also a Chancellor of Carleton University, a Rhodes Scholar and an Officer of the Order of Canada.

"Arthur was a legendary figure at Carleton University who will be sadly missed by our entire community, and by all who had the honour to know him and to work closely with him," Carleton University President and vice-Chancellor Samy Mahmoud said in a statement.

"He was a devoted public servant and a role model to many of us here at the university. He was an exceptional man in terms of his wealth of knowledge, commitment to education and devotion to humanity."

In 1999, the university created the Arthur Kroeger College of Public Affairs to honour the example Kroeger set while working in public office.

The school will continue to honour Kroeger by working with his daughters to create a scholarship fund in his name.

His funeral will be held at Ottawa's Christ Church Cathedral at 2 p.m. Thursday.
