Friends plan Monday tribute to teen killed in crash
Friends of a young Gatineau man killed in a head-on crash are planning a memorial Monday at his former schools.
19-year-old Anthony McColl died Saturday on Highway 148 near Luskville, Que., when a speeding Mazda Protégé crossed into his lane.
A Facebook group called "R.I.P Anthony McColl wear white in his honor" encouraging people to wear white at D'Arcy McGee High School and Heritage College had over 1,500 members as of Sunday evening.
"A guy as nice as Anthony didn't deserve to go the way he did," said another.
Martin Fournel with the MRC des Collines said police were pursuing a suspected impaired driver Saturday when the chase got too dangerous and they decided to follow up at the address the car was registered to.
Around 2:40 a.m. that Mazda swerved into the eastbound lane of Highway 148 and collided with a Honda Civic carrying McColl and four female passengers.
Both drivers were killed; McColl, along with the 20-year-old driver of the Mazda, Brandon Crawford of Shawville, Que., according to police.
The four passengers in the Honda sustained serious but non life-threatening injuries. They range in age from 15-17 years old.
Police say speed and alcohol are believed to be a factor.
