A makeshift memorial marks the scene where a popular 17-year-old football player was killed when the car he was travelling in hydroplaned and slammed into a sign post in Gatineau.

Friends left flowers, photos, school memorabilia and a football on the side of the road on Maloney Boulevard on Thursday, paying tribute to their friend, whose life was cut short when the vehicle he was travelling in crashed just before the lunch hour on Wednesday.

Michel Simard, who was riding in the front passenger seat of the vehicle, was killed in the crash; two other teens suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries.

Simard's godparents told CTV Ottawa they are overwhelmed by the outpouring of support since the tragic collision.

He was a really good football player, said Claude Simard, the young teen's godfather and uncle. He said his godson, who was supposed to graduate from Nicolas-Gatineau high school this year, was being scouted for an Ottawa football team.

A Facebook group has already emerged in remembrance of Simard. Friends say he will be greatly missed.

Deadly week on area roads

Simard is the fourth teenager to die on area roads in the last week. Three Ottawa teens were killed when their truck rolled into a ditch in Navan early Sunday morning.

Chris Sabean, 19, Brad Rivington, 19, and Ginny Marko, 16, were pronounced dead at the scene.

The lone survivor of the crash, 18-year-old Elise Grundy, was treated at the scene and rushed to hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries.

Grundy's parents say they believe their daughter's survival is nothing short of a 'miracle.'

"Elise sustained serious and significant injuries. Her survival of the crash can only be described as a miracle," reads a statement issued by Grundy's family.

"Elise is grief stricken at the loss of her dear friends. Our family aches for the loss that their families are enduring."

Funerals for the three teenagers killed in the Navan crash will be held on Friday.

Ginny Marko, 16, will be remembered at 1 p.m. at Orlans United Church, located at 1111 Orlans Blvd.
