Ottawa police say a group of friends were walking home just after 3 o'clock Wednesday morning when one of them shouted a warning that came too late.

Just as the words were being said, a 22-year-old Algonquin student was struck by a dark Nissan at the corner of Bronson and Somerset Avenue.

The victim was rushed to hospital where he died from his injuries.

"They were just telling him to stay still and don't move," said neighbourhood resident Denise Larabie.

Ottawa police are looking for the suspect vehicle. Cst. Mark Soucy says it may have damage to the front on the passenger's side.

Anyone with information is asked to call traffic investigators at 613-236-1222 ext. 2481 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
