A CN freight train derailment near Oshawa is disrupting Via Rail traffic between Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal.

A spokesperson for CN said three locomotives and nine freight cars left the tracks near the GO Transit station in Pickering, east of Toronto.

Diesel fuel leaked from one of the locomotives, and lumber from one of the cars littered the tracks.

Although one of the cars was carrying methylene, the derailment did not cause a spill. Nobody was injured in the incident.

However, the derailment is continuing to back up train travel through eastern Ontario and into Montreal.

Although Via Rail is arranging buses to transport travellers to their destinations, passengers are warned to expect delays of two to three hours.

It's currently unknown how long it will take to clean up the mess. However, Via warns the incident may impact train travel on Wednesday as well.
