A Sudbury husband, wife, daughter and a male companion are confirmed dead after a plane crash in Algonquin Park Saturday, North Bay OPP say.
The propeller-driven Piper PA-28 Cherokee - a small plane that carries four passengers - left Kingston that day at 4:30 p.m. and was expected to land in Sudbury around 6:30 p.m.
Family members were waiting for the plane to arrive, says Const. Carolle Dionne, and notified the OPP around 10:30 p.m. when nothing was heard from the plane.
The North Bay detachment's joint rescue co-ordination centre located the plane in Devine Township, on Devine Lake, at 3:30 a.m. Sunday. Dionne describes the area as extremely remote, with the only access being through bush trails and waterways.
Members of the OPP's emergency response, forensic identification and climb units are all on the ground conducting an investigation, Dionne says, but adds it is not clear if they have reached the crash site on foot yet.
The Transport Canada safety board has been notified. Dionne says they are not sure if the cause was mechanical or weather related.
No names are released yet pending notification of family members, but Dionne said the daughter was a university student and likely in her late teens or early 20s. The male companion was around the same age.
