A former Pembroke teacher who was shot and critically injured in Honduras is surrounded by family as he recovers from brain surgery on his 59th birthday.

Doctors, who had hoped to bring Dennis Spencer out of a medically-induced coma, had to operate on the long-time teacher to relieve pressure to his brain.

Spencer's two daughters have now joined their mother in Honduras to support him as he battles critical injuries he received when he was caught in the middle of a wild carjacking and shootout last Friday.

Spencer has spent four years living in Honduras, where he's principal of the small English-language school Escuela Internacional La Lima.
