Australian police said a former Ottawa resident killed himself and his two-year-old son in Brisbane Monday morning.

The Courier-Mail said 40-year-old Jason Lees threw his son off the Story Bridge around 3 a.m. local time.

The Ridgemont High School and Carleton University graduate then jumped off the bridge himself, according to reports.

The newspaper said he was a teacher at one of the area's most well-regarded schools and an international rugby referee.

"He was an outstanding teacher and very generous contributor to the whole of our program, not just the classroom, which of course adds to the shock of the circumstances surrounding this," said Anglican Church Grammar School headmaster Jonathan Hensman to the Courier-Mail.

Police said he left his home and drove to within a few hundred metres of the bridge, then drove his bike closer before jumping.
