Hundreds of former Nortel workers showed up for an information meeting to discuss what might happen to their pensions now that the company has filed for bankruptcy protection.

Many of those in attendance told CTV Ottawa they have little confidence Nortel will look after them as the company works to gain control of its finances.

In recent days, worried pensioners from Ottawa and Toronto have set up a committee to deal with the issue.

Mark Zigler, who is recognized as one of Canada's top pension and employment lawyers, is working with the former employees.

Zigler told CTV Ottawa concerned pensioners must get organized and make sure their voices are heard.

He says although people won't lose pensions, they might be reduced because the company's pension fund has an estimated shortfall of as much as $2 billion.

The situation will depend on how the courts and creditors resolve Nortel's future.

Although organizers intended to hold just one session at 2 p.m., they scheduled two more meetings at 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.
