Former Ottawa mayor Jim Durrell has been appointed as a community representative to the police services board.

Durrell, who was mayor from 1985 to 1991, will serve on the board for a three-year term that will be effective until July 12, 2011.

"Mr. Durrell's well-established relationships with key community partners as well as his governance experience and business acumen will be tremendous assets to the Police Services Board," said Coun. Eli El-Chantiry, chairman of the police services board. "We are very pleased to welcome him to the board."

Besides his role as mayor, Durrell also served on the board of directors for the Business Development Bank of Canada and the Ottawa International airport. He is currently chairman of the Ottawa Convention Centre.

As a civillian member of the board, Durrell will receive an $8,000 stipend per year.
