Former Ottawa councillor Shawn Little has died while on vacation in Cuba, according to a memo sent out by city solicitor Rick O’Connor.

Little represented the Kitchissippi ward from 1997 until 2006.

Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson released a statement on Little's passing Monday afternoon.

"It is with sadness that I learned today of the passing of former city councillor Shawn Little," Watson wrote. "I had the honour of serving with Shawn during his first term on city council from 1997-2000. I want to offer my condolences to Shawn's family at this difficult time. May Shawn rest in peace."

A moment of silence will be held at Wednesday’s council meeting and flags will be lowered to half-staff when a memorial is held at a later date.

Little was 48 years old. The cause of death has not been released.
