Officials at the Quinte West Detention Centre in Napanee, Ont. won't confirm or deny reports that the former commander of CFB Trenton, who is accused of killing two eastern Ontario women, attempted suicide over the Easter long weekend.
The Kingston Whig-Standard reports Col. Russell Williams is now on suicide watch after he reportedly tried to kill himself in his prison cell by forcing a cardboard toilet paper roll stuffed with foil down his throat.
According to unnamed sources, the newspaper said Williams apparently used mustard to write a suicide note on the wall of his prison cell and tried to keep guards out by jamming his cell door.
Williams' lawyer Michael Edelson wouldn't comment on the report. However, he told CTV Ottawa he's concerned about the number of leaks coming out of the detention centre. He also said he has no plans to visit Williams this week.
Williams is charged with first-degree murder in the deaths of 27-year-old Jessica Lloyd, of Belleville, and 37-year-old Cpl. Marie-France Comeau, who served under his command at CFB Trenton.
Williams is also charged with two September 2009 home-invasion sexual assaults in Tweed, Ont. His next court appearance is scheduled for April 29.
