A winter weather travel advisory has been issued for Ottawa and most of the region. Environment Canada says about 10 cm will fall, beginning midday on Monday until early Tuesday morning. Travel will be impacted due to acumulating snow, particularly during the Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning commutes.
"We have 510 fully trained operators that are ready if needed, this isn't one of those situations that is al hands on deck," said Laila Gibbons, the director of roads and parking services for the City of Ottawa.
"We have our staff are ready and trucks are ready to be deployed as the weather condition change and we need to send them out."
The city says there are more than 590 pieces of equipment available for snow removal and management.
"Sometimes we do pre-treat the roads," said Gibbons.
"At this time the only places have crews doing it is trouble spots, typically roads are dry at this time. but in morning we will have wet roads and some snow."
The city says there are three options for road maintenance, including salt, sand and grit.
"We actually planned right through the summer," said Gibbons.
"We'll take care of the roads for you."
Some areas may reach up to 15 centimetres thanks to a low pressure system which will track south of the lower Great Lakes. There remains some uncertainty regarding the track of the low and expected snowfall amounts.
According to Environment Canada, the following areas are expected to feel winter’s early arrival:
- Ottawa
- Gatineau
- Belleville
- Kingston
- Merrickville
- Brockville
- Cornwall
- Maxville-Alexandria
- Winchester
- Morrisburg
- Prescott and Russell
- Smiths Falls
Drivers are being warned that travel will be impacted due to the accumulating snowfall.
