Members of the Algonquin First Nations community held a Sacred Fire ceremony Sunday at Beaver Pond Forest in Kanata in a final attempt to block clear-cutting of a piece of east Ottawa land they deem crucial to the environment.

The group says the land is sacred and an essential ecosystem within the South March Highlands.

The owner of the property, KNL Developments, is planning to begin clear-cutting the trees Monday to make way for housing.

Protests have been going on for months as the group has tried to prevent KNL Developments from going through with its plans.
