The association representing Ottawa's firefighters is concerned about procedures to prevent asbestos exposure after a March blaze at a south-end industrial park.

A crew of 47 battled the second-floor fire at 2660 Southvale Cr. on the night of March 10, which caused $5 million in damages.

After three days of on-scene work by inspectors, restoration crews entered the three-storey commercial building. They conducted asbestos testing because construction occurred prior to 1986, said Erik Leicht of the Ottawa Professional Fire Fighters Association.

The results were positive, but firefighters only found out this week --leading them to worry about potential exposure.

"It's definitely an eye-opener," Leicht told CTV Ottawa on Thursday.

"There's not much we can do now. It's a month after the call now."

The association wants better notification of asbestos detection and a second set of gear to prevent contaminating trucks and fire stations.
