One person is homeless after a fire broke out at a home on Old Montreal Road in rural east Ottawa late Tuesday morning.
Firefighters say one of two units at 1715 Old Montreal Rd. was destroyed when a fire started on the main floor, spreading up the staircase into the attic.
Crews were called to the home at about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday when someone spotted smoke coming from the roof. Nobody was home.
Firefighters say several water tankers were sent to the rural area to make sure firefighters had enough water to fight the blaze.
It took about an hour to bring the fire under control. Damage is estimated at $250,000.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
