Ontario's fire marshal's office has been called in to investigate a $2.5-million fire at a Kanata sports dome that has left soccer players without a pitch.

Firefighters responded to a fire at the Thunderbird Sports Centre on Richardson Side Road, near Huntmar Drive, at about 8 a.m. Monday.

Firefighters had to deal with heavy smoke as they battled to keep the blaze from spreading to the ceiling.

The fire is believed to have started in the kitchen area. However, the cause of the blaze remains under investigation.

The facility houses two indoor soccer fields. A nine-hole golf course is outside.
