Two people are in hospital with serious injuries after a head-on crash caused a truck to catch fire Friday morning.

Ottawa fire crews said they were called to March Road near Corkery Road in west Ottawa around 11:30 a.m. for a head-on collision.

Fire spokesperson Marc Messier said the impact caused a truck to go into the ditch and hit a hydro pole, making the transformer fall into its bed and catch fire.

A firefighter en route to the station came across the crash and helped both drivers get away from the scene, including helping a woman get out of her non-burning vehicle.

“I exited the vehicle and approached a man who was crawling away from the truck," said Andrew Doble. "I got him to a safe distance in a comfortable position and gave him some oxygen.”

Ottawa paramedics said they took a 38-year-old man to hospital with a fractured ankle and possible spinal injuries, as well as a woman in her 40s with potential spinal and collarbone injuries.

Fire officials said those two people were the only ones inside the vehicles.
