Federal Public Works Minister Rona Ambrose announced Friday the government will build two new office towers in Gatineau, creating 1,000 construction jobs in the process.

Crews are scheduled to start working on the towers this spring. One building will go up on Boulevard de la Carrière; the other will be built in downtown Hull.

Construction is estimated to take about two years to complete. The building at 455 Boulevard de la Carrière should be ready for federal workers to move-in by October 2012. The other building should be complete by April 2013.

The federal government will lease the buildings for 25 years. At the end of the lease, the government will have the option to buy back the tower in downtown Hull for $1.

Meanwhile, the building on Boulevard de la Carrière will automatically revert back to the Crown when the lease is complete.
