Ottawa city staff say they are questioning how a new roof on a recreation centre could fail three years after it was installed.

The Pinecrest Recreation Complex was forced to close their swimming pool and cancel swimming lessons for more than a month after part of the ceiling broke apart Sunday morning.

No one was hurt.

Councillors for the area said this is part of a bigger problem.

“We need to do more to protect and maintain the existing infrastructure,” said Rick Chiarelli. “As we bring more people in and intensify population in existing areas, we need to expand those existing recreation facilities to meet the new larger populations.”

The Pinecrest Recreation Centre was built in the 60's.

The complex won't re-open until early November at the earliest. In the meantime, the city is going after the supplier who installed the roof in 2009.
