A man in his 40s is dead and a woman and child are in hospital with serious injuries after a two-vehicle collision on the Hunt Club Bridge in Ottawa's south end.

The horrific crash between a car and a minivan happened on Hunt Club Road between Prince of Wales Drive and Riverside Drive just after midday on Tuesday.

Police say the 45-year-old male driver of the car lost control of his vehicle as he headed eastbound. The car crossed into the westbound lanes and struck a minivan in the left-hand turning lane.

The male driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene. His name will not be released until next of kin are notified.

Paramedics say two occupants of the minivan, including a child, were also treated for serious injuries.

Paramedics treated the 32-year-old female driver of the van for a leg fracture and chest injuries. A four-year-old girl was treated for an injury to her pelvis, as well as cuts and bruises.

Both are in serious, but stable condition in hospital.

Paramedics say a newborn girl and a two-year-old boy were also in the van at the time of the crash. The children were taken to the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario as a precautionary measure.

Emergency workers say all three children were properly secured in their car seats at the time of the collision.

As a result of the crash, Hunt Club Road was closed in both directions between Prince of Wales Drive and Riverside Drive for about five hours. Police are continuing their investigation.

Anyone with information about the collision is asked to contact Ottawa police at 613-236-1222, ext. 2481 or Crime Stoppers at 613-233-TIPS.
