One person is dead after a fatal collision involving a tanker truck closed a potion of Highway 17 near Chalk River, Wednesday morning.

Ontario provincial police say the collision happened when a car travelling westbound collided with an eastbound tractor trailer at about 7:45 a.m. at Fields Road, about two hours northwest of Ottawa.

Police say three other vehicles were also indirectly involved in the crash.

The collision closed a portion of the highway for almost eight hours. In the meantime, drivers were asked to use Clouthier Road to access Chalk River.

Police say the name of the victim will not be released until next of kin are notified.
