Ottawa paramedics say a fatal collision between a utility truck and a minivan caused both vehicles to burst into flames after colliding on Russell Road near Carlsbad Springs just before 3 p.m. Monday.

Emergency workers say the driver of the minivan could not be rescued from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Paramedics say they do not know the age or sex of the driver. It is also unclear whether or not there were any other passengers travelling in the van at the time of the crash.

Both of the occupants travelling in the utility truck were men in their mid-twenties.

One of the men was treated for serious head injuries and was airlifted from the scene.

He is currently in hospital in serious condition.

The other man suffered serious neck and back injuries and is in serious but stable condition in hospital.

The collision has closed Russell Road between Boundary and Milton Roads in Ottawa's east end. Police are asking motorists to avoid the area until further notice.
