A family is homeless after a blaze tore through their Barrhaven home late Friday night.

Brian Gamble, the owner of the home, located at 24 Elke Dr., noticed the fire in the family's garage just before midnight. By the time firefighters arrived, the garage, and the new Lexus parked inside, was fully engulfed.

The car's gas tank help fuel the fire which quickly spread to the rest of the home, according to fire service spokesman Marc Messier.

Damage was estimated at $400,000 to the building and $200,000 to its contents.

The blaze also caused $175,000 in damage to a neighbouring home which is also uninhabitable after the blaze, leaving another person homeless.

Fire crews are continuing to investigate the cause of the fire.
