An evening explosion and fire in Kanata Wednesday night has destroyed one home, damaged another and displaced two families.

Ottawa firefighters were called to a home at 168 Grassy Plains around 9 p.m. Wednesday after reports of explosions and fire.

When they arrived, firefighters found that the fire had started in the garage of the home, spread to the attic and the side of the home next door.

A family of five escaped the home without injury.  The neighbouring home is owned by former Senators forward Shaun Van Allen.  There were no injuries.

Damage is estimated at $850,000.
