The face of Elgin Street in downtown Ottawa will soon change as the former home of the National Gallery gets demolished to make way for a new federal finance building.

The Lorne Building at 90 Elgin St., located to the left of the British High Commission, is getting demolished. The seven-storey building used to be home to the National Gallery.

The building will be replaced by a 17-storey "green" office tower that will offer retail space on the ground floor.

The government says the project will create 625 jobs. It should be complete by 2014.
