Four local men received Medals of Bravery from Canada's Governor-General on Friday.

Ottawa police constable Alain Rochette kicked through a door to try and rescue a woman who was being stabbed by a hunting knife in 2005.

His partner, Ottawa's Sean Ralph, received his medal at an earlier ceremony.

John Chatterton, an Ottawa firefighter, suffered second-degree burns and numerous fractures after jumping from the third floor of a burning building in 2007.

He was the last one to leave after staying to guide his two colleagues out first.

OPP constable Darrell Wagner received his medal for using an inner tube to swim out and rescue a man clinging to a rock in the Ottawa River near Pembroke in 2007.

Constable Patrick Benoit with the Kingston Police Force was honoured for climbing a ten-metre rock wall in total darkness to rescue a truck driver moments before his rig exploded.

The driver had been trapped above his burning vehicle after losing control and hitting a communications tower on Highway 401.

Gov. Gen. David Johnston handed out the medals at a ceremony at Rideau Hall that saw a total of 42 Medals of Bravery given, as well as two Stars of Courage.

Chatterton, Benoit and Wagner had previously received provincial bravery medals in 2008.
