People in Ottawa are among Canadians across the country marking Earth Day with a range of eco-friendly events, all aimed protecting the environment.

Volunteers planned to clean up litter and plant trees along the Sawmill Creek shoreline.

Other Earth Day events were scheduled throughout the capital, including the 6th annual Aveda Canada Walk for Water.

Ottawa is one of 15 Canadian cities participating in the walk.

It raises money for WaterCan's community-driven water projects throughout eastern Africa.

Cities from coast to coast are ringing in Earth Day with dozens of activities, including a zoo run in Saskatoon, a parade in Vancouver and an Earth Day festival in Edmonton.

More than six-million Canadians reportedly participate in annual Earth Day projects.

Every year, Earth Day celebrations take place around the world to promote green living and raise environmental awareness.
