A man is recovering after crashing his vehicle into the drained Rideau Canal near Carleton University early Thursday.

Ottawa paramedics said they were called to Colonel By Drive between the Heron Road Bridge and University Drive around 4:10 a.m.

A mid-sized sedan had skidded around 75 feet before crashing into the Canal’s wall, falling 20 feet to the muddy bottom and rolling over another 75 feet.

Ottawa fire officials said their crews extricated a man paramedics placed in his late 20s from the sedan before he could be lifted from the Canal using ladders and ropes.

Paramedics said he was treated for lower body injuries and exposure to the cold (it’s unknown how long he was in the Canal) before being taken to hospital in stable condition.

Colonel By Drive was re-opened by police around 7:20 a.m. Thursday.
