Driver injured in crash on Hwy. 401 in Kingston after allegedly fleeing police

Ontario Provincial Police say one person was injured Wednesday morning following a crash on Highway 401 in the Kingston area.
Officers attempted to stop a driver for a traffic violation at around 11:30 a.m. but the driver refused to pull over. Police said the driver later crashed near the exit at Sir John A. Macdonald Boulevard and blocked the off-ramp.
"The individual did not stop the vehicle and accelerated away at increasing speeds. The officer did not continue to follow the vehicle, for public safety reasons," the OPP said in an update Thursday. "The vehicle driver exited at the Sir John A. MacDonald ramp, with excessive speed and rolled several times, ending up in the ditch."
The off-ramp was blocked for about two hours. It reopened just after 2 p.m.
Police note that the vehicle was severely damaged. There were two people inside, at the time. Police said the driver was taken to hospital.
In the update, police said a 19-year-old man has been charged with:
- Dangerous operation of a conveyance
- Flight from peace officer
- Operation while prohibited under the criminal code
- Fail to comply with probation order
- Careless driving
- Driving a motor vehicle while under suspension
- Use plate not authorized for vehicle
The 19-year-old remains in custody. He appeared in court Thursday.
