OTTAWA -- Ottawa police continue to investigate after a car crashed into a home in the Elmvale Acres neighbourhood overnight, killing the 37-year-old driver.

"It sounded like a car accident, but not just a car accident, like you could hear the sound wasn’t just breaking glass and metal," said Tanya Halsall, who was camping in the backyard with her kids at the time of the crash.

"It was quite scary, I thought maybe something else had happened, maybe an explosion."

Emergency crews were called to a home on Chapman Boulevard, between Arch Street and Saunderson Drive, at around 11:57 p.m. Tuesday. A vehicle had rolled and crashed into a house, causing significant damage, Ottawa Fire Services said in a release.

While no one inside the home was injured, police say the driver, a 37-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The individual has not yet been identified. Police say they are still attempting to contact next-of-kin.

What caused the driver to crash is unknown.

"I can't believe a car went flying through a house in this neighbourhood," said Halsall. "You think that when you're in your house it's pretty safe."

Other neighbours were woken up by the sound of the collision.

"We woke up to the crash sound and the lady screaming," said Sahar Alzahrani. "We looked from the window, I see the car in the house."
