The driver of a flatbed trailer that blocked a road where two eastern Ontario teenagers were killed last week has been charged with criminal negligence.

Garett Allen, 18, and his girlfriend Naomi Theoret, 17, were killed when their pickup truck slammed into a parked tractor trailer that was blocking a rural road near Vankleek Hill, east of Ottawa. Their vehicle was mangled and both teens were pronounced dead at the scene.

Early in the investigation, police said no flares or brightly coloured cones were placed on the road to warn oncoming traffic of the blocked lane.

Ontario Provincial Police met with the 43-year-old truck driver on Wednesday night. André Duquette, of Hammond, is charged with two counts of criminal negligence causing death.

He was released on a promise to appear in court in L'Original on Feb. 16. The maximum penalty for the charge is life in prison.
