Drilling for samples along the proposed route for the city's downtown tunnel will lead to traffic restrictions in the downtown core this week.

The drilling will take place at four locations: Rideau Street between Sussex Drive and Nicholas Street, the corner of Queen and O'Connor Streets, Bayview Station and Hurdman Station.

The drilling on Rideau Street will result in traffic restrictions on that street between May 11 and May 19.

During that time, Rideau Street will only be open to buses and taxis between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. Other vehicles will be allowed to use the road after 7 p.m. Monday to Friday, and all day on Saturday and Sunday.

Crews were already drilling for core samples at the corner of Queen and O'Connor Streets on Monday.

The drills will go down a depth of 300 feet, at a 60-degree angle, to obtain the necessary samples.
